Celebrating Dance in Jersey

In its fourth year, Dance on the Lawn continued to celebrate dance in New Jersey, aiming to increase exposure to the art form by bringing together a diverse program of professional and emerging companies, as well as students from around the state, in a community setting that was free and open to the public.

Emerging and Professional Dancers Take the Stage

Lauren Connolly: Selected as the 2017 “Emerging Commissioned New Jersey Choreographer,” Lauren Connolly presented new work during the festival.

New Jersey Dance Companies: The festival showcased various New Jersey dance companies, including Randy James’ 10 Hairy Legs, Donna Scro’s Freespace Dance, Maurice Chestnut’s Dance Therapy, and Robert Mark Dance. ​

New York Dance Companies: Performances included special choreography by Troy Powell (Artistic Director – Ailey II), Stephen Petronio Company, and Project 44 Dance. ​

From Contemporary to Tap: Dance on the Lawn Highlights

Lauren Connolly’s Emerging Choreographer Debut

  • Selected as the 2017 Emerging NJ Choreographer, Connolly developed a brand-new piece that premiered at Dance on the Lawn.
  • This commission provided mentorship, resources, and a platform for her to share her artistic voice.

A Growing Festival with Increasing Recognition

  • The festival saw its largest audience yet, with hundreds of attendees.
  • Dance on the Lawn continued to attract media coverage and recognition from arts organizations across the state.
  • The New Jersey State Arts Council recognized four Dance on the Lawn artists with state honors:
    • Nancy Turano, Kyle Marshall, Lauren Connolly, and Hillary-Marie.

Showcasing Dance’s Diversity

Performers from New Jersey and New York created a dynamic fusion of local and national talent.

A blend of contemporary, tap, modern, and classical dance styles was presented, reflecting the festival’s dedication to inclusivity and artistic expression.
